I had to pop to the post office in my local village today.

What should have been a straight forward walk turned into a stressful and treacherous* journey because of the rain, which frankly is absurd.

I failed miserably to dodge the deep puddles and got splashed several times by oversized cars because the footways were too narrow and they were travelling too fast. My charcoal trousers turned black and dirty. I was wearing appropriate clothes before you ask.

In the end I had to divert off the main route but I still had to leap jump over massive rivers that ran across every crossing and junction, further adding to my journey.

This journey would have been impossible for anyone with mobility difficulties. This simply isn't right.

We're willing to invest big money in fancy public realm schemes but somehew can't master the basics, that is maintaining and improving our existing footpaths and drains.

With climate change likely to cause increasingly turbulent wet weather in this country then surely we need to spend time getting our existing network of footpaths, cycle ways and gulleys/drains functioning better as well.

Failing to do this will only lead to more shorter journeys by car, something we simply can't afford to happen.

End of rant! 😊

*needed a shot of brandy when I finally got home
